A Case of the Mean Reds: 5 Steps Out of Your Funk

A case of the mean reds – something that really struck home this week when a bunch of little things threw me into a downward spiral and I got stuck among the pity dwellers.  We all know that we can’t be Audrey Hepburn sitting in a bleakly furnished apartment in New York City strumming Moon River on our ukulele’s while hanging on foot out of the fire escape.

Sometimes life just demands a bit too much from us.  Rather we are left to deal with our feelings and emotions in non-Glee fashion we can’t break out in song to change it.  I think some of the most prophetic words someone ever said to me were:

“If you don’t like the way things are all you have to do is change your mind.”

Prophetic words from a college professor afforded to me after several thousands in tuition later, which I probably could have found for free on Google – but nonetheless it stuck with me.  So I found it appropriate on Friday the 13th of all days to offer up wisdom of 5 steps that can take you from the “mean reds” to the hot pinks and yellows of emotional bliss on a day that is usually left for the superstitious and scared:

1.       Wine - Honestly I don’t really care what anyone says, sometimes a stiff drink is really what it is going to take!  I know alcohol is a depressant after several glasses and all the jazz but truthfully after a long day where my motivation lacks getting my butt to the gym to get high on those “natural” endorphins sometimes you just have to open a good bottle.  I find that a light sauvignon blanc or crisp chard will do the trick.  No need to add reds to a mean case of them already – that’s just bad karma!

 2.       Running – After my aforementioned wine worshiping, you have to burn those calories somehow.  Just being outside and running, will get the aggression out.  For a single girl, when you don’t have time to work it out on someone, this is a healthy (and for his sake – maybe the right) alternative.  Plus, thanks to the Canadians and their brilliant studies “Running Can Make You a Sex God.”  My advice, get a good playlist going.  Mine includes the soundtrack to the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show – mash-ups and some killer British Rock Music and let be honest the motivation to run just a bit faster and a bit longer.

 3.       Good Friends – You have those friends that make going out epic.  Others that can be good movie buddies and then you have those girls – your Miranda, Samantha and Charlotte’s of the world that no matter what color your mood are there for you every step of the way.  Those are the ones to call.  I have to admit I am not one to bug people with trivial problems but what I learned was that they are there for the trivial stuff – lean on them and tell them.  I got some of the best advice from my circle this week and could not be more thankful to have such a strong family of friends.

 4.       Plan Ahead – After an amazing weekend in my favorite city in the world I had to face work, laundry, life drama and then the slow oncoming of my week of foul moods.  Around Wednesday, literally the Marianas Trench of the mean reds, two ticks short of crying my friend reminded me of my weekend coming up.  A weekend full of birthday parties, pool days and a photo shoot.  I TOTALLY FORGOT!  This was a mood changer and deal breaker for the better.  Make sure to make plans with the people that bring you up the most, pull you out of your “funk and into the fabulous.” (That could totally be a Sex and The City line – and I stole it.)

 5.       Change Something – This is the biggie but you know it’s totally worth it because we have all been in those life funks where we just need a change – a new apt decoration, hairstyle, trip – something that isn’t just a new dress to make you feel good for a day or two.  So tomorrow I am getting a haircut and color.  I will of course stay blonde but it’s time for that summer blonde that will bring me into a new season and new look.  Sometimes like Carrie, we need a new hairstyle to spring us forward, a new apartment to cleanse the bad and in my case a ticket for my next trip not sure where but I need the next milestone to look forward to.

So happy planning and changing – nothing can be more exciting than stepping out of your red’s and shining like gold!  Got any other’s that work for you?  Leave a comment and let me know!  I am always open to new things…

How To: Tame That Mane With Kacie Boguskie

To officially kick-off The Over-Analyst, a beauty post seemed to be the most wanted in all categories.  There was no struggle in who I wanted to interview.  It was absolutely and most definitely, the one and only...Ms. Kacie Boguskie.  Most of you might know her from Season 16 of The Bachelor but this America's Sweetheart is getting more tweets and emails regarding her hair than anyone I know.  Not only did she make a strong impression with her sweet, Southern personality but is was that hair!  Oh, that hair.  Because we are dear friends, I knew she wouldn't turn down the interview.  And if she did, I was planning on threatening her I would unfollow her on Twitter.  But Kacie was beyond ecstatic to share with my readers on how she really tames that mane of hers.  So here she is ladies (and gents), KACIE BOGUSKIE.

The Over-Analyst:  So you must get this a lot but we were kind of OBSESSED with your hair on The Bachelor.  Do many people stop you and ask you about the products you use?  Because I would.

Kacie:  People have deemed it "Kacie hair".  I have a friend who said she knows someone who works in a salon in DC and people keep coming in saying "I need help, I have Kacie B hair."  I use great Pantene ProV and Biosilk soothing serum (it's an oil I put on my hair before I dry it).
The Over-Analyst:  We obviously saw your mane and how it reacted in tropical locations.  I liked when you rocked your curls but it seems that the humidity got to it a little.  What do you think are the best products for women (and even men) to use to tame that mane?

Kacie:  Wow!  The humidity didn't like my hair, or my hair didn't like the humidity (Which came first? The chicken or the egg??).  The best cure is some moose!  And some soothing serum!  Moose after you shower and once it dries, add some soothing serum... And PRAY!

The Over-Analyst:  Can you walk me through your daily process – how many times/week do you wash you hair?  What kind of shampoo/conditioner do you use?  What products do you apply after you get out of the shower?  And what kind of hair tools do you use to make this magical transformation happen?

Kacie:  Depending on the weather and my workouts, I try to only wash my hair every other day.  Because the process takes longer than the average girl, I just don't have that kind of time.  And besides, it's healthier for your hair not to wash every single day.  I shampoo my hair twice with Pantene Beautiful Lengths Shampoo and condition with the conditioner. I towel dry my hair and add Biosilk silk therapy serum and then use a round brush to dry.  I take the top part of my hair and clip it up and dry that part first and then divide the top part and dry it last. Then I take a break to rest my arms and decide what I'm feeling that day, curls or straight?!  No matter what I divide it into sections and curl or straighten in small sections!  Takes about 10 minutes to straighten and 15 to curl.  I have a great 1 inch curling iron I like by Hot Tools and I also have a 1 1/2 inch for the big loose curls by Conair.  I have a bombshell curling wand (which is my FAVE)!  Sooo many tools and so much time.  It's all worth it!

The Over-Analyst:  Do you pay attention to your diet to better you hair?  Any specific foods that you think help?  And which vitamins do you take?

Kacie:  I have noticed when I eat more protein my hair is shinier and grows quicker. I also take a prenatal vitamin to help it grow quicker. My dad saw then one time and was a little concerned, had to tell him they don't get you pregnant and then give him the birds and the bees speech! Haha just kidding!!!

The Over-Analyst:  I know you recently tried an at-home keratin treatment!  Which one?  Can you walk me through the process and if you were satisfied with the results?

Kacie:  I recently did the suave at home keratin treatment, and I must say t does a great job! It last about 30 days and takes about and hour to do.  There are 3 steps and the key to it is to comb your hair continuously and keep it as straight as possible!  If you don't want to pay the salon prices I highly reccomend it!!

How-To: Move Beyond The Basic Braid

HOW TO FISHTAIL BRAID

1. Spritz hair spray onto dry hair--Bucket suggest using Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray. "Rake your hands through your hair instead of a brush and you'll get that modern, ropey look," Bucket says.

2. Separate hair into two equal sections at the back of the head. Fishtail braiding requires only two sections (not three, like a classic or French braid).

3. Use your index fingers to pull out a half-inch section of hair from the area near the base of your ear on the right section of your head. Cross it over to the left section. (It's important to pull sections from underneath when you cross over to that scaly look.)

4. Repeat with a half-inch piece from the left section, crossing it over to the right. "And don't worry if layers start to fall out of the braid," Bucket says. "It gives the look a pretty, effortless feel."

5. Continue adding half-inch pieces until you reach the ends, and secure with an elastic. Pull on the braid a bit to loosen it. "Don't put pressure on yourself to make it perfect," Bucket says. "If there's a bump or knot, leave it."

How-To: Just Accept That Apartment Hunting In New York City Will Never Get Better

nyc

Apartment hunting in New York is one of the most stressful, frightening and unpredictable processes. Apartments go fast. Any decent apartment will hit the market and be gone within days, if not the same day. So do you commit or do you hope for better apartments to come? There's never time to sleep on it because when you wake up the next morning, it's gone. So next time around when you're in the same situation, there is even more stress and pressure. Eventually, you either settle or find your perfect apartment. By the end, you don't even care because you're just so happy it's all over. I know people who actually have signed a lease knowing their bedroom doesn't even have a window. Jail cells have windows. After you have lived in New York for some time, you accept that there is no getting around finding a cheap apartment. What New Yorkers call a 'deal' is disgusting. But you either accept it or get the hell out. I chose to accept, even though my parents, still to this day, tell me to get the hell out. And LUCKY me, it's that time again to find an apartment aka time to knock five years off my life. It's time to say goodbye to friends and doing anything remotely fun. Looking at apartments is your new life for the next month. If it's not, you're for sure going to live in a shoe box. And if you're loaded, simply press the X in the upper right hand corner of your screen.

Somehow I've managed to move 6 times and I've only lived in New York for 5. That is just wrong. But now I've realized your living situation has a huge impact on your happiness. Do you know if you keep pressing the refresh button on Craigslist, new apartments constantly hit the market? It's a sick addiction and every time I catch myself in these ridiculous moments, I promise myself it's the last year I'm doing this. 6th time around and what am I doing? I'm looking for another apartment. They say New York will chew you up and spit you out. Well, I think I've finally accepted our love/hate relationship. New York, I love you right now but I'll probably hate you tomorrow when some bum coughs on me in the subway. If that's not true love, I don't know what is.

Here are the apartment-hunting sites I'm loving right now...

And when I'm not getting scammed, I love Craigslist

How-To: Make A Small Apartment Appear Bigger

With mirrored pieces of furniture!

Living in New York, I am always trying to make my room look bigger! Mirrors are the perfect piece of furniture that have many uses. Not only can they make a room look bigger, they also reflect light from the outside and can make a room look brighter. I mean it's an illusion but who has to know?
Find some great, affordable pieces at Target.

How-To: Live In The Moment

"Ever feel like you operate in only three modes: rewind, play and fast-forward? It's time to hit pause and take a breath. Because as Ferris Bueller, the king of carpe diem, once said, 'Life goes by pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.' So let go of past mistakes, stop stressing over daily deadlines and forget your fears about the future. You can look at life either as a series of hours and minutes in which to accomplish tasks, or as a series of moments and experiences to be noticed, relished and lived. Turn down the volume on the noisy racket that is your daily grind and cultivate the habit of enjoying life's simpler gifts. Indulge in small pleasures and you may find that the world doesn't spin quite as fast as it used to."

Try these...

Smile at everyone who meets your eye

Do something unexpected
Follow your instincts
Surprise someone at least once a month
Spend a day away from the computer
Allow yourself to be wild, crazy and irresponsible every once in a while
Live your dreams instead of dreaming your life
Spontaneously kiss a stranger
Go barefoot
Think less and do more
Live for today
Give a flower to a stranger
Be more spontaneous
Dance in the street
Stop planning and start doing
Turn off your cell phone and don't check your email for an entire weekend
Say "shut up and kiss me"
Live your life unplanned

How-To: Create a Cozy Room

Don't you wish some rooms felt cozier? One way to get this effect is to add some color to the top of the ceiling. White walls create an illusion that extends the height of a room. The darker the color, the smaller the room will feel. It's perfect for a large walk-in closet. If you want to open up a room but still add the fun, splash of color, just paint the surrounding walls white/off-white. Anything you don't see often in a home, I fall in love with. My next apartment, I guarantee every wall will be painted.
